George Whitehead triumphs in exciting climax to the Boys Championship
After a thrilling days golf at Morecambe Golf Club, Clitheroe's George Whitehead edged a win in the event after a card playoff with a 36 hole total of 137, from Royal Lytham & St Anne's Corallis Delaney. Zac Sturgeon finished a shot back on 138, in 3rd place.
The day saw the course looking fantastic in the glorious sunshine, with the stunning views over the bay toward the Lake District being shown to their best.
After the morning rounds, it looked like it was going to be a very close finish, and this came to pass. Some great golf was played in the afternoon and the excitement mounted as the last few groups closed in on the clubhouse. A special mention goes to Royal Birkdale's Jake Maloret, who scored a hole in one at the 16th to finish his second round 1,3,3. Not a feat many will ever repeat!
George's afternoon score of 66 saw him lift the trophy, which means his name joins some very illustrious winners. Well done George, and thank you to everyone at Morecambe for their help and hospitality which was exceptional.
Best Nett prizes are also awarded, and Oliver Coleman and Sam Waddington who both finished on 127 were edged out by a strong performance from Hart Common's Arran Kenyon, with a nett total of 126. Well done Arran!
The day also sees the two best nett scores by players from the same club, going toward the champion club prize. Winning this also sees them qualify for the national finals, representing Lancashire. The winners were Leyland Golf Club, represented by Sam Waddington and Ben Chesworth. Good luck to Leyland who will be representing us later in the year.
