Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs Ltd

I was very scathing about our performances last year, it really was an Annus Horribilis and I asked for everyone to get back to the bench mark level of success we have been used to.

The following brief reports should prove that 2013 was just a minor blip for us.

Northumberland                             The Northumberland GC                   WON  12 – 6

An excellent result on what is always a very testing golf course. It was just the start to the season we needed. Even the matches we lost were very close affairs.                                                                 Am/ PM wins for Tony Holt / Rob Parry and Stuart Fawcett/ John Cockerill

Cheshire                                            Delamere Forest GC               WON 12 ½ - 5 ½

The Cheshire match is always the litmus test for us. A close morning greensomes on a very dry & fast running course, was followed by a near total domination in the fourballs  which lead to a very comfortable victory, surely this was going to be our year.                                                                                                                                                                          Am/ Pm wins for Mike Gray/ Stewart King & Stuart Fawcett / Glyn Rees

Yorkshire                                         Ormskirk GC                                       WON 12 ½ - 5 ½

On a beautiful sunny day on a very well presented course we gained a clear lead in the morning and despite a little early blip after lunch, we ran out comfortable winners again.                                                                                                      Am/ Pm wins for Mike Gray/ Stewart King, Alan Gillespie/ Andy Samuels                                                         & Stuart Fawcett/ Glyn Rees

Cumbria                                            Wilpshire GC                                      WON 16 ½ - 1 ½

Yet another glorious day to enhance the wonderful views up the Ribble Valley. It is probably the only thing our visitors had to enjoy as they only managed one half  in both the morning & afternoon series of matches  The League was now done and dusted with a game to go.

Durham                                            Pleasington GC                                   WON 12 ½ - 5 ½

It was important to maintain our level of performance, despite the League already being secured. Again a very solid morning put us in command and we ran out very comfortable winners.                                                                                           Am/ Pm wins for Andy Westwell/ Ian Crowther, Jez Morgan/ Alan Gillespie                                                           &  Tom Lockwood/ Andy Samuels

The arrival of a few new players has rejuvenated the team. It would be unfair to mention any individuals as all the teams we fielded were very strong from No’ 1 down to No’12 and everyone played their part in the victories. This year we have managed to win a record number of points in the five matches and proved that we are yet again the dominant County in the North.

Staffordshire                                              Bury GC                                              LOST 7 ½ - 10 ½

On one of the few wet days of the year. We struggled to cope with the conditions in the morning. Although we only lost one afternoon fourball match, four of the others were halved so we couldn’t overturn the deficit from the morning.

Lincolnshire                                      Childwall GC                                      WON  9 ½ - 8 ½

Four changes were needed from the original line up. On another glorious day and we lunched a little adrift. However a strong afternoon performance resulted in a narrow victory .                        Am/ Pm wins for: Jez Morgan/ Robert Fox and Mike Gray/ Mike Lay

Shropshire/ Herefordshire                       Hesketh GC                                        WON 9 ½  - 8 ½

Eight changes needed  for this match! Despite this we had a commanding morning lead which our visitors chipped away after lunch but we managed to hang on for a narrow victory.                                                                                                                                                                                     Am/ Pm wins for Brian Lang/ Chris Rogers and a special mention to local members Colin Crumlin & Archie Crick who stood in for us & won both of their matches!

Warwickshire                                   Olton GC                                            LOST 8 ½ - 9 ½

A new course for us and it proved to be a real delight. Only three changes for this match! An excellent morning lead was whittled away by our hosts and  they managed to gain a narrow win.

SDGA Seniors                                  West Lancs GC                                   WON 9 – 3

A good opening season result against a well matched SDGA side.

Davyhulme Park Seniors                                                                           DRAW 6 – 6

As in previous years, a very close match.

Lancaster Seniors                                                                                        LOST 10 – 2

As has become the habit, we got a good hiding by our hosts.

Bentham Seniors                                                                                        LOST 6 – 4

Closer than normal. With the top two matches halving it could have gone our way.

Denton Seniors                                                                                            LOST 9 – 3

Struggled to raise a team and we proved no match for our hosts.

Tony Holt proved a worthy winner in taking The Lancashire Seniors title at his first attempt at Lytham Green Drive. No doubt many more titles will follow.

Alan Gillespie used his local knowledge to survive a terrific 36 hole head to head battle with The English Seniors Champion Stephen East to win The Northern Counties Seniors title at Clitheroe.

The season closed with us winning The Northern Counties Qualifier at Carlisle by seven shots to progress to the National Finals for the fourth successive year.                                                                 The team was: Ian Crowther, Tony Holt, Alan Gillespie,  Mike Gray, Jez Morgan & Glyn Rees.

At the end of 2013 I made a promise to bring back The Championship Pennant, well we did it! After comfortable wins over Gloucestershire & Nottinghamshire and a tense final storm affected day we just overcame Kent. The above team plus Terry Brown & Stewart King & of course our team manager Stuart Fawcett really did us all proud. 2014 truly was an ANNUS MIRABILLIS.
