Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs Ltd

Despite the summer being the worst on record for weather we managed to produce our best ever series of inter
county results winning eight and only losing one.

(1) NORTHUMBERLAND @ Gosforth GC Result: Won 8 - 4
An indication of what was to come, the match was played on a very wet course and with heavy rain
forecast it was decided to reduce the afternoon matches to 13 holes. But a very solid team effort saw the
season off to a flying start. Am/Pm wins for: Glyn Rees/ Terry Brown and Robert Fox/ Stuart Fawcett

(2) YORKSHIRE @ CLITHEROE GC Result; Won 8 - 4
Another damp course playing all of its length but a very solid morning greensomes result paved the way for
another comfortable victory. The last three pairings all coming home victorious. Am/Pm wins for:
Glyn Rees/ Phil Ansell and Stuart Fawcett/ Ken Sargent

(3) CUMBRIA @ CHORLEY GC Result: Won 7.5 - 4.5
Into August and yet another damp course, fortunately the local torrential rain steared away from Chorley. Yet
again we went into lunch with a commanding lead but that was followed by a nervy afternoon series. The first
three matches all lost but as we have proved several times our tail is always strong and in the end came away
with another win. Am/PM wins for: Stuart Fawcett/ Ken Sargent , Norman Fletcher/ John Roberts and
Bob Davies / Martyn Senior

(4) DURHAM @ ROYAL BIRKDALE GC Result: Won 6.5 - 5.5
Luckily the weeks wind and rain relented for a day and we were blessed with a calm day but on a course that
didn’t have its usual run. Our opponents were obviously inspired by the venue and gave us a tremendous
game. A narrow morning lead soon disappeared and the result went down to the last match. Yet again our tail
didn’t let us down.

(5) CHESHIRE @ ROMILEY GC Result: Won 8.5 - 3.5
It was fitting that the League depended on this rearranged match against our usual strong opponents. But we
saved our best to the last and put in a commanding performance. Comfortably ahead after the greensomes we
didn’t take the foot off the pedal and only lost one of the six four ball matches to run out easy winners and
deservedly retain our title. Am/ Pm wins for: Alan Gillespie/ Jez Morgan, Mike
Gray/ John Roberts and Stuart Fawcett/ Norman Fletcher
In summary we used a total of 18 players and every single one contributed points for the team. The team spirit
we developed last year was still very evident. I mentioned earlier our tail proved to be our real strength and it
was the key to our success. I have said many times a point won in match six counts just the same as one in the
top match.

The team of Terry Brown, Robert Fox, Mike Gray, Stewart King, Jez Morgan & Glyn Rees survived a very
windy and testy 36 holes at Heswall and won by a single shot due in some part to Cheshire and Yorkshire
coming to grief on the 36th hole. These six along with Stuart Fawcett & Alan Gillespie plus Captain Norman
Fletcher will go forward to represent Lancashire in the English County finals at Heworth ( Durham) in October.

(1) SHROPSHIRE & HEREFORDHIRE @ Haydock Park GC Result: Won 9.5 – 8.5
As usual we hosted our Midland friends in the season opener. One of the few matches to be played in
sunshine. A very strong morning effort was followed by an up & down series of four balls but we managed to
hold on for a season opening victory. Am/ Pm wins for: Mike Gray/ Martyn Senior

(2) STAFFORDSHIRE @ Worsley GC Result: Won 13 - 5
On our first ever visit to Worsley we gained a slight advantage in a series of close greensomes. However we
really put our visitors to the sword in the afternoon for a very easy win.
Am/ Pm wins for: John Roberts/ Bob Davies, David Lomax / Rory Callan Bill Mainwaring/ Geoff Stewart

(3) LINCOLNSHIRE @ Rossendale GC Result: Won 11.5 - 6.5
Yet another first time venue and despite the recent horrendous weather, the course was in fine
condition. A very close morning saw us go into lunch one point adrift. Despite winning the first three four balls,
the result was always in doubt as the last three matches were all halved.
Am/ Pm wins for: Mike Gray/ Robert Fox

(4) WARWICKSHIRE @ Robin Hood GC Result: Lost 6 - 12
Despite some severe traffic congestion all our players arrived and returned home in one piece. On a
course that required a good deal of local knowledge we never really got into the match and suffered our only
defeat of the season.

(1) SDGA SENIORS @ Southport Old Links Result; Draw 6 - 6
The first visit for the majority to this very nice 9 hole course. A very close match.

(2) DAVYHULME PARK SENIORS Result: Lost 1 - 11
Not much one can say except that we got a good hiding.

(3) LANCASTER SENIORS Result: Lost 4 - 8
Yet again our hosts proved too strong for us.

(4) BENTHAM SENIORS Result: Won 7 - 5
Thankfully we fielded a full team this year and came away with a deserved win.

(5) DENTON SENIORS Result: Lost 3 - 9 Our hosts
proved yet again that we find it difficult giving shots to old men!!

Unfortunately we just fell at the final hurdle again. A first match half with Nottinghamshire was followed by a
tremendous win against the eventual winners Hertfordshire leaving us in the box seat going into our last match
against Gloucestershire but an agonising 5 – 4 loss left us with nothing. We will learn from our experience and
plan for 2013.
