Smithies puts his to rivals to the sword

 

 

ROGER Smithies won the Royton Sword for the second time in four years in the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit which he topped in 2002.

The former Lancashire County stalwart posted scores of 70 and 71 for a one-over-par total in testing conditions, dropping his only shot at the short 14th in the second round.

Smithies, from Manchester, prevailed by three strokes from Didsbury’s Jack Brooks who moved into fifth place in the ranking 235 points adrift of leader Tom Dolan, from Heswall.
