Battling Bolton lose to Rest of Lancs

AN under strength Bolton GA side put up a spirited fight before succumbing 8-4 to the Rest of Lancashire at Dunscar.

They drew first blood in the foursomes when Harwood brothers Ian and Anthony Stirling beat the Red Rose men’s top pairing of double county champion Mark Young, from Longridge, and Pleasington’s Michael Hunt by one hole.

The remaining ties were closely contested before the Rest prevailed 3-1.

They turned up the heat in the singles, Young and Hunt taking the two opening matches against Anthony Stirling and Steve Bryan, from Old Links..

Ian Stirling then overcame John Carroll, another double Lancashire champion from Huyton & Prescot by one hole and Adam Stone (Lancaster) went down 4&3 against Adam Whalley (Dunscar) as Bolton maintained the overall two-point margin.

But the Rest were already home and dry by the time Bob Taylor (Lostock Park) claimed the prized scalp of England player Paul Kinnear, winner of last week’s Faldo Series UK Championship at West Lancs, in the final match.
