Double duty at Carris Trophy for young internationals

Six young internationals will be on double duty next week when the Carris Trophy takes place at Hunstanton Golf Club, Norfolk, from 19-22 July.

They’ll be playing for both team and individual honours in the English U18 boys’ open amateur stroke play championship.

The players selected for the two Nations Cup teams are: Toby Briggs of Norfolk, Matty Lamb of Northumberland and Dan O’Loughlin of Nottinghamshire; and Oliver Clarke of Lancashire (Image © Leaderboard Photography), Callum Farr of Northamptonshire and Rhys Nevin-Wharton of Cheshire.

They will be aiming to keep an England grip on the Nations Cup, which last year was shared with Denmark. The team event is played alongside the first two rounds of the championship, with the best two scores from three counting each day.

The six players will also be focussed on the individual contest for the Carris Trophy, which is one of the most sought-after of boys’ titles. Past winners include Sandy Lyle, Justin Rose, Graeme Storm and Tom Lewis.

It always attracts a very strong international field, with players in this year's field representing 11 countries in addition to England.

Hunstanton has hosted many of the top amateur championships but this is the first time that the Carris has been played on the classic Norfolk links course.

The full field of 144 competitors will play 18 holes rounds on each of the first two days of the championship. The field will then be cut to the top 60 players and ties who will play the final 36 holes over the remaining two days.

The Nations Cup players

Team One:

Toby Briggs, 16, (Dunston Hall) was third in this year’s McEvoy Trophy and sixth in the Fairhaven Trophies. Last year he tied for the McGregor Trophy, only to lose in a three-way play-off.

Matty Lamb, 18, (Hexham) tied fourth in the McEvoy Trophy, repeating his result of 2015. During last season he secured a string of top 10 results and represented England in the Boys’ Home Internationals.

Dan O’Loughlin, 17, (Ruddington Grange) was fourth in both the German boys’ open and the Fairhaven Trophies and tied ninth in the Peter McEvoy Trophy. He represented England in last year’s Thunderbird international in the USA.

Team Two:

Oliver Clarke, 17, (Hillside) was runner-up in the Northern boys’ county qualifier, fifth in the Fairhaven Trophies, eighth in the Hampshire Salver and played all four rounds of the Brabazon Trophy. Last year he won the U17 trophy at the Irish boys’ amateur.

Callum Farr, 17, (Priors Hall) tied fourth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, shared seventh place in the Peter McEvoy Trophy and helped Northamptonshire reach the Boys’ County Finals last year and this. He was 35th in the Brabazon Trophy.

Rhys Nevin-Wharton, 18, (Sandiway) is a boy international and last year tied third in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, shared fourth place in the Irish boys’ open and reached the match play stages of the English amateur.

Briggs, Lamb, O’Loughlin and Farr all represented England in last week’s European boys’ team championship.
