LANCASHIRE had too much fire power for Cheshire at Hesketh where they beat
the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League defending champions 12.5 - 5.5.
Skipper Bill Bromilow said: "We just kept our noses in front in the
foursomes before stepping up a gear in the singles. We won nine of the 12
ties and the overall margin of victory could be crucial at the end of the
season.
"We can still win the league but it looks like we will have to beat leaders
Yorkshire at Moortown next month."
Cheshire have lost all three fixtures and dropped to the foot of the table
with captain David Peel admitting: "We've just not been performing well this
year but Lancashire were too strong for us."
Honours were even in the top four singles matches before the Red Rose men
asserted their authority with England player Paul Kinnear despatching Peel
5&3 and Jon Hurst, six-under-par after 11 holes, beating Barry Barker by the
same margin.
There was no way back for Cheshire when Ian Kenwright eclipsed David Hird
2&1.
With Northumberland providing the shock of the day with a 10-8 win against
Cumbria at Eden, Lancashire moved up to second place on "goal difference" to
Yorkshire who play their match in hand against Durham at Pannal next
Saturday.
