CUMBRIA leapfrogged Lancashire in the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties
League at Carlisle as Yorkshire took pole position and defending champions
Cheshire lost again.
Red Rose skipper Bill Bromilow could offer no excuses as his side succumbed
10.5-7.5, gleaning only one point from the top six singles which sealed
their fate.
"We mismanaged the foursomes and Cumbria were too strong for us in the
afternoon," rued Bromilow.
But it might have been a different story if Gareth Clark and 17-year-old
Sean Blinkhorn hadn't lost the last two holes in a halved match with Martin
Hand and Geoff Nixon.
Instead, Lancashire trailed by a point going into the singles and
Cumbria held the upper hand until Jon Hurst, Michael Hunt Sean Towndrow and
Steve McGlynn gave some respectability to the final score.
Cheshire lost their second successive match by a point against
Durham at South Shields as Yorkshire overpowered Northumberland 13-5 at
Almouth.
