The Lancashire Boys played against Cheshire Boys at Caldy GC on 26th June on a good day for golf. The greens were firm and quick with punishing rough for an errant shot.
We were missing four of our best players due to their examinations or playing in The Open qualifiers. We were still able to field a strong team, 5 of whom were aged 16 or under and 7 were playing in their first U18 match.
Despite the inexperience, Lancashire got off to a promising start in the morning Foursomes. Three pairs allowed their advantage to slip over the closing holes to finish all square. I was particularly pleased to see the Talarczyk and Holland brothers playing together.
In the afternoon singles we saw the boys struggle against some excellent golf and were unable to make the most of the opportunities they were presented with.
Debutants Owen Leigh, George Holland and Josh Fallows remained beaten during the day after producing impressive performances.
There overall result of 11-7 to Cheshire does not truly reflect how close the overall match was.
We are now looking forward to next weeks 'Little 6' at Warrington GC.
