Staffordshire players were welcomed to Lancashire by a beautiful sunny day.
The Leigh Golf Course , while a little wet underfoot from the previous days deluge, was well presented with greens fast and true.
Morning Greensomes
Early signs were good for Staffordshire as they took the lead after the first two matches.
A very tight opening match led to a Half and a fine start to the second match by Ben Rhodes and Colin Wooley gave Staffordshire the lead.
The tail of the Lancashire Team wagged to overturn the deficit with wins in matches three, five and six.
Stephen Mathews, and new player Adrian Smith, Doug Heggie and Glen Macbryde could not be separated – A theme which would continue in the afternoon.
This gave Lancashire a nice lead to take into the afternoon Fourballs
Afternoon Fourballs
Something at lunch obviously perked up the Lancashire players as the first two matches stormed to 4 & 3 wins.
Ian Crowther and new player, Gary Byrne improved on the morning result.
The experienced pairing of Terry Brown and Clive Appleby reversing the morning loss.
The next 3 matches were much tighter however – all ending up in Half Matches
A fine front nine by Stewart Gibson and Peter Shurrock put them into a commanding lead which they managed to hold on to as Kelvin Edwards and Terry Henwood made a late fightback.
Overall the result seemed comfortable for Lancashire, but had some the 5 Half Matches gone to Staffordshire the result may have been different.
All players enjoyed the post-match meal and hospitality. We look forward to the return match next year.
