DIDSBURY professional Peter Barber, a former Lancashire player, is one of 10 experienced teachers who will spearhead England Golf's regional coaching programme which starts in September. Under the tenure of the national body's coaching director Nigel Edwards, investment in the existing initiative will be increased to extend the number of contact days with the players selected to attend. Former European Tour player Barber, who takes on the North West region and has worked with Cheshire for a number of years, made three appearances for Lancashire in 1973 when he was a member at Denton.. Edwards said: "I'm very pleased with the individuals selected, it was a tough recruitment process and the competition was very strong. We have the opportunity to increase our investment in regional coaching and it was imperative that we identified the right coaches to take the programme to the next level. "Our national squads and england teams will prosper with more players progressing at a younger age." The successful candidates will undergo an induction and training weekend in September at England Golf headquarters in Woodhall Spa before joining the regional management team to identify their squad for the winter training. Boys demonstrating the required talent and promise will have the opportunity to apply to join the regional coaching programme over the coming weeks.
