LANCASHIRE battled back from a 4-2 foursomes deficit to overcome Durham 12-6
in the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League at Preston, writes DAVID
BIRTILL.
But their chances of retaining the title were dented when leaders Yorkshire
beat nearest rivals Cumbria 10-8 at Workington.
Red Rose skipper Paul Williams said: "I was proud of the way our players
rallied in the singles, when we lost only one match, but we must come out of
the traps a lot faster in the foursomes.
"It's important we keep our momentum, although we were hoping Cumbria would
have at least halved to keep alive our hopes."
Henry Tomlinson was Lancashire's biggest winner, dispatching Tom Smith 6&5.
Ian Kenwright defeated Martin McCririck 5&4 and there were emphatic
victories by Ciaran Doherty, who saw off Chris Handy 4&3, and John Carroll,
who eclipsed Stuart Brown 4&2.
Curtis Clarkin, who won on his debut against Yorkshire in May, impressed in
his second outing with a gusty 3&1 success over Jason McGuire.
Elsewhere, Cheshire forfeited a three point foursomes lead to lose 10.5-7.5
at Burgham Park against Northumberland to replace them at the foot of the
table.
